"In my artwork I have always moved back and forwards between classical realism, figurative and abstract expressionism. My recent works are explorations of energy and frequency. I focus on themes around refraction, movement, resonance and explore and the medium until the painting has come to life.
My work is directly influenced by Asaf’s work, the shapes and the effects of the light reflections through the glass. At one point our gallery and studio were next to each other in Byron Bay and I often would walk in to his gallery. I would soak in the light reflected by his sculptures and inspired by the light and patterns, I would often mirror this in my work which can clearly be seen in some of paintings.
I was classically trained at the Royal Academy of The Hague and have been very fortunate with my teachers. I have always alternated between Fine Art and Information Technology. Besides many years pursuing fine arts painting and drawing. With equal passion I have pursued a career in IT, which started with wanting to turn my paintings into animations. I have enjoyed creative and lead roles in the Games and online-training industries. Currently I’m involved with a company called Croomo in Brisbane as a Technical Strategist, spearheading technological solutions, predominantly for Virtual and Augmented Reality projects.
"Frequently the inspiration for a piece is based on something that captures my attention in a brief moment, perhaps during a yoga session or a walk. I’ve noticed that holding on to an abstract idea like this this is a skill you can strengthen and explore in expression. Examples of these used for the paintings can be quite abstracts, such as: the energy around a body when someone is dancing, movement in water or the colour pattern of an emotion. Exploring these concepts is very inspiring to me. Each painting is a journey that undergoes many changes, allowing transformation to happen during the process.
These works although often reasonably abstract are the progression of years of working with the human form, models and dancers and hold themes around human and spiritual condition. They lend themselves to the principals of colour healing, and flow from non-objective to geometric forms. The shapes are integrated into a matrix of kaleidoscopic colour which are to stimulate the imagination and the mind.
Thick layers of paint are applied with brush and palette knife, to create a dynamic sense of texture and movement within the colour scapes. I have used this approach in combination with purely figurative work, to evoke a more dreamlike imagery. It's the fine line between reality and the expressive power of colour. Every piece creates a unique vibration in the room, yet allows each viewer their own experience of the piece. The art aims to connect with the mind's eye, through dreamscapes and soul exploration."
